Ever wonder why "Accidents Happen" seems kind of stuck onto the end of Season Two, or why none of the characters are showing the changes from the previous story arc? Ever wonder why Punky Brewster went off the air for a year and then came back on a different channel with something different about it? One of the little-spoken truths about Punky is that after Season Two, the show had technically been cancelled. It didn't go immediately to a hiatus, and it didn't just take longer than expected to formulate a new season. For a short period of time, until David W. Duclon struck a syndication deal for Seasons Three and Four, Punky Brewster was dead.

Another piece of trivia is that "Accidents Happen" was never a planned part of the second season; it was hastily written, filmed, and aired as NBC's corporate response to the accidental destruction of the space shuttle Challenger.

So, if Season Two had aired as originally planned, and somehow the syndication deal had been struck down, that means this five-part story arc would have been Punky Brewster's final episodes. Looking at the way the fifth part of the arc wraps things up, it's easy to see that this was actually the plan, given the finality of it and the sense of "and they lived happily after". It doesn't leave everything unanswered, but it wouldn't have been a bad ending all things considered.

So, from February 12th to March 12th, the Treehouse will review and explore what came close to being the five-part finale. It's a month of changes on Punky's Treehouse as we explore the original end of Punky Brewster.
